Course Description, Objectives and Evaluation

Course Description (as per the UVic Calendar)

Cross‐cultural conflicts involve navigating complexities and ever‐changing perceptions. In this course, we will use experiential approaches and dialogue to explore processes, capacities and tools to bridge cultural conflicts that draw on multiple intelligences. We will develop fluency with ways of naming, framing and taming conflict across cultural contexts; and fluency with culture as it animates and offers creative ways through conflict. Participants will apply theory and research to interpersonal, intercommunal and international conflicts.

Fall term 2016
In the fall term of 2016, the course emphasizes diverse approaches to understanding culture and conflict. Students engage with literature and other media from several disciplines including anthropology, intercultural communication, philosophy, religious studies, peace and conflict studies and international human rights. Participants have opportunities to consider the importance of culture in preventing and transforming conflict in the context of negotiation, conflict intervention and policy making. The course emphasises dynamics of power and inequality. The course also increases students’ familiarity of international norms for understanding inter-cultural and inter-religious conflict, including awareness of key international human rights treaties and other instruments, knowledge of which is increasingly recognized as important for competence in work in, public, non-profit and private sectors in Canada and internationally. The course includes discussion of peacebuilding after violence or genocide, and emphasizes Canada’s public policy conflicts involving indigenous peoples and the recent recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC).

AV equipment

Students are responsible for arranging for any AV equipment they need for a class presentation (overheads, screens, flipcharts, VCRs, Powerpoint projectors, etc.) This should be done at least one week before the presentation. Most classrooms are equipped with overhead projectors, screens and whiteboards or chalkeboards. If you use whiteboard make sure in advance that there are erasable pens available for your use. The instructor for this course uses powerpoint on a regular basis, however, please notify her in plenty of time if you wish to make a presentation that requires any special powerpoint tools or other special audiovisual equipment (including films intended to be shown). The UVic Audio Visual Services located in the basement of the Clearihue Building C051 (beneath the Computer Store) rents some equipment to students (250-721-8292, https://web.uvic.ca/av/).
